Is Farmling a Word?

Monday is always hard after a near perfect weekend. It's back to school and back to work and back to running all over town and back again on errands. It's only Monday and I miss the weekend already.

I sold my first eggs today. It's very exciting. I drop them off at Monkey's school and they are placed in a little fridge for other parents and faculty to pick up. We decided that our little farmette (I think I prefer to call it a farmling) needed a name. It was a marketing ploy and also I need a good farm name to put on Gigi's registration papers. A border collie should have a farm in her name. From now on our little farmling on the hill shall be known as Little Creek Farm. The word "farm" may be stretching it just a little at the moment, but I'm thinking of farm as a state of mind, not just a physical location. Besides we have big dreams for all the acres surrounding us (just as soon as we win the lottery...). So the happy hens of Little Creek Farm are finally earning their keep. And I'm tickled pink.

  1. Love the name. I read recently that a big garden is a small farm, and a small farm is a big garden. That's all we are for now, plus the ducks, so I try not to feel sheepish that our "small farm" has a name.

  2. That's excellent. I think those of us with small properties and lots of ambition to do things right should embrace our farm-ness!

By the way, do you know if there is there any rule about duplication of names? The s.o. and I like the name "Pitchfork Farm," but there is one in Massachusetts. Of course, there are already more "Three Dog Farms" than you can shake a stick at, so maybe it doesn't matter.

  3. I don't think there are any rules, especially if the farm is in another state. There may be if it is registered as a "business". I know in Missouri when I wanted to open a bank account for my studio, I had to register it first in order to open an account.

I think poultry or fowl and a big garden should constitute a farm. Now if only I had a little more pasture for a few sheep or goats, I'd be happier!
