Some of the natives

With all these walks in the woods, I'm back to identifying plants. Some are easy...

Smooth Sumac

Some are hard. This one in particular is giving me a headache. I'm thinking a Helianthus, but it could be an aster. It's in an open field on top of a mountain at around 3800 feet. The top is an abandoned Christmas tree farm. Perhaps if the flowers were in full bloom it would be easier...

Any guesses?

  1. I was up in Ashe county this weekend, as I've mentioned. I was surprised at all of the xmas tree farms!

  2. There seem to be a lot of tree farms up that way and on the Highland Plateau. They need a certain elevation to do well - I think above 3,000 feet...
On my way to one of our projects I pass a field of little tiny spruces in rows. Little miniature Christmas trees in waiting.
